Aptis

What is Aptis?

Aptis is a modern and flexible English assessment system designed to meet the diverse needs of organisations and individuals around the world.

Aptis is a business-to-business product which is used by organisations and institutions to benchmark the English language levels of their employees, potential employees, students or teachers.

Testing English levels from A1-C on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, Aptis is an English test for adults (16+), which can be used to assess ability in all four English skills - speaking, listening, reading and writing.

What does it test?

Aptis is made up of a number of components which are taken in packages rather than individually. You select the core language knowledge component (grammar and vocabulary) and combine it with one or more or more of the skills components for accurate and relevant testing. If you wish to test a mix of skills, different components can be taken together. Targeted testing means more informative results, helping you refine your training or recruitment to be more efficient and cost effective in the future.

Aptis content can also be adapted to suit a specific domain, such as for teaching or travel and tourism, and content can be customised to suit specific cultural contexts and variants of English.

With computer, pen and paper or telephone-based delivery options, you choose when, how and in what way to test, to ensure you get the results you need.

Aptis scoring

Reading and listening components are marked automatically by the online platform, while the speaking and writing components are marked by a live examiner. An Aptis candidate will receive a score on a numerical scale (0 to 50) for the grammar and vocabulary section, and a score on a numerical scale (0 – 50) and CEFR level (A1 – C) for each skill they take. This will make up the candidate’s profile of language proficiency.

So whether your testing requirement is for recruitment, workforce development or training,
Aptis is the forward thinking English testing you’ve been waiting for.

First Aptis Examinations in Uganda

For the first time ever, Aptis examinations were sat for in Uganda. They were offered as one of the aptitude tests for the Tullow Group Scholarship Scheme (TGSS) applicants. The tests were done for two days, from 5th -6th May, 2015 at Protea Hotel in Kampala.

Aptis is an innovative English assessment tool from the British Council. It is designed to help organisations and institutions to benchmark the English language levels of their employees, potential employees, students and teachers.

Developed by testing experts and based on the latest research in assessment, Aptis is the smarter way to evaluate English reading, writing, listening and speaking skills for individuals.

Several British Council staff were there to see that the exams are carried out smoothly. Among those present was: Carol Nyaika, Head of Partnerships and Projects, Millicent Mugabi, Project Manager Scholarships and Mark Mushabe, Exams Manager.

One of British Council’s staff, Kato Gabriel who was administering the examinations, said “The sessions are going on well and the response of the candidates is great. We have not had any trouble with the computers or internet connectivity, which is great.”

Ebwalu Gabriel, a civil engineer and an applicant of TGSS said “It is a better way to test the mental capability of someone who has been out of school for a long time.”

Aptis is one of the many tests and examinations administered by the British Council to improve career prospects. British Council helps people achieve their goals by obtaining UK qualifications recognized by governments, universities, professional bodies and employers around the world.
